The MELAO International Orchestra was born in Québec in January 2002, with the meeting of the two founder musicians: Dagoberto Falla, a colombian pianist, with more than 20 years of playing experience, in orchestras like « El Combo de Oro » and « La Fabulosa », and Didacio Perdomo, a colombian singer who was the main singer of latin bands like « La Patrulla Siete » et « El Nuevo Poder ». Since they both were very nostalgic after latin rhythms and music, such as the merenque, the salsa, the cumbia and the bachata, they decide to start a tropical musical orchestra, which will be named « Melao International ». Melao is the name of a sweet syrup extracted from sugar cane, which can instantly bring back a taste of tropical sun and beaches. But the word Melao is also used a metaphor for life and joy.
The love for the latin music and the wish to transmit to the Québec public a high quality rendition of it, that would represent the authentic latin-american culture, led Dagoberto and Didacio to form and establish a musical group of excellent performance. Today, Melao is composed of twelve musicians:
| Dagoberto Falla | Pianiste et directeur musical | Colombien | | Didacio Perdomo | Chanteur Principal | Colombien | | Patricia Morasse | Chanteuse | Québécoise | | Bruno Goder | Trompette | Québécois | | Marc-André Labelle | Trompette | Québécois | | Juan David Falla | Trombone | Colombien | | Cristian Conde | Congas | Colombien | | Carlos Fierro | Timbales - Drum | Colombien | | Julian Conde | Bongo - Tambora | Colombien | | Julie Belavance | Saxo Tenor | Québécoise | | Nancy St-Jean | Saxo Alto | Québécoise | | Mircea Trifan | Basse | Roumain |
The twelve proffesional musicians have given many representations that were extremely well appreciated, in cities located in the Québec province, but also in the United States. In particular, the orchestra played and participated to many events organized by the city of Québec and the Québec "Ministère des relations internationaux". The Melao International Orchestra continues to transmit to its public the warmth and savour of latin culture with each of their representations, through music and dance. The Melao International Orchestra also recorded two music albums containing many of the latin rhythms, during 2002 and 2003.
